How to Start a Blog For Beginners - Choosing a Topic For Your Blog
By Alana Roberts
Learn how to blog from beginner to blogger. Starting a blog has become a popular choice for many people hoping to make money online. Most beginner bloggers start their first blog without doing any research into the topic they are going to blog about, the demand for information on that topic or the potential profitability of their chosen topic.
In fact many beginners do not even have a topic in mind when they start their first blog. In some circumstances this is perfectly okay, for instance if you want to create a personal blog to keep in touch with family and friends and share what's happening in your life on a regular basis. If however you are a beginner to blogging and you are hoping to make money online with a blog then you need to do some research.
There are countless guides online to help you learn how to blog but the problem that most people face is finding out where to start. Will you start out with a free hosted blog or should you buy your own domain name? What type of theme are you going to use? Which step should come first? These are all common questions but in reality if you want to start a successful blog then the very first place you should start is at home, with a pen and paper.
The first and most common mistake is not planning your blog. You must brainstorm for topics, write out a list of at least ten topics that you think you could use for your blog. You need at least ten ideas because when you start to do your research you will probably find that only one or two are real possibilities. For this reason you should choose topics that you know a fair amount about, you do not need to be an expert but you do need to have a decent amount of knowledge on your chosen topic to create your blogs content.
Once you have a list of ten you should go through each one and sort them in order of interest. Write notes beside each topic on your list of further related sub topics that you could possibly add to your main topic. If you cannot think of any sub topics, remove that topic from your list, it will probably be difficult to write content for if you cannot think of at least two related topics.
Go through your entire list and narrow it down to a few choices, once you are left with about three topics you will need to start researching these topics online. There are many ways to do this, far too many to write about in one article but to start you should now begin by using a search engine like Google to explore the related sites that are already online. Gather ideas and look for what is not there.
Look for the gaps in your topic, the missing information that you may be able to provide. Doing this you should be able to narrow down your list to just one topic. Unfortunately that is only the beginning of starting a blog. So if you are serious about blogging, start with choosing a topic but keep in mind that your blog is going to be an on going project and you are going to have to work hard to get it set up and running.
I am a full time mother and a part time blogger and website developer, I blog about the lessons I learned on my journey from beginner to blogger. My aim is to help others learn how to blog and earn an extra income online from home.
I am not a full time blogger because for me, family comes first but blogging is something I enjoy and learning how to turn a blog into an extra income has been an added benefit to my journey. Part of learning how to blog is about experimenting with different techniques and finding out what works and what doesn't work, if you are a beginner blogger the most important thing is to research. It is possible to make money online with a blog if you are prepared to work hard. I am not claiming to be making a fortune online, but I am making money and what makes it enjoyable for me is sharing what I have learned and hopefully helping others who are just starting out.
