Home solar power systems are likely to become more important in many households. This is because PV technology is improving, thereby making solar panels cheaper.

Home solar power systems are not just confined to electricity production. Solar energy can be used to heat up water and air. The architecture and interior design of your home can also make use of sunlight for maximum energy conservation. Quite possibly, home builders will give more consideration to this aspect in their design in the future.

There are many ways you can implement a home solar power system.

  1. First, you can install a solar water heater to absorb heat energy from the sun. This can help you reduce heating costs considerably. In fact, among all the types of solar energy system, this should be considered first, because solar heaters have high efficiencies, are easy to install and are relatively cheaper. Thus you can see quick, immediate benefits by having a solar heater.
  2. Second, you may want to supply all your low power consumption items with solar electricity. Some of these include garage lights, garden lights, electronic insect repellents, gate openers and water sprinklers.
  3. Or you can also start with a mini home solar power system to supply your home office with electricity. Appliances like reading lamps, computers, small printers and fans usually do not take up a lot of energy.
  4. Finally, you can have a full-scale photovoltaic panel array to power up your entire house. This means solar energy will now be the source of power to drive your washing machine, dryer, lights, television, et cetera. The cheapest way to implement this system is to tie it to the grid.

In this way, you will not need rechargeable batteries, which are quite expensive. Furthermore, these batteries cannot last perpetually. Thus they need to be replaced after some time (usually 10-15 years, depending on how you use it) and this costs more money.

Yet if you want to live close to nature in a log cabin hidden amongst pretty deciduous trees, you are also free to do so with off-grid systems. Of course, as discussed, you have to pay a little more for this freedom.

Some people find it difficult to install solar panels on their property due to the upfront costs. What they can do is to take a loan, which will pay for itself with the savings from monthly energy bills. Or they can first get as many PV panels as their financial resources allow. Then when they have enough savings, they can scale up the system to provide their entire home with solar electricity.

As you can see, there are many benefits as well as "hidden" pitfalls when using solar panels. You may want to visit http://www.diysolarpanelsworld.com to find out more about installing solar panels and to learn from others who may have more experience.
